Woburn Mall Redevelopment Brings New DSW Store, Expansion of Market Basket

Improvements to traffic flow and parking lot lighting also underway

The owners of the revamped Woburn Mall today announced that DSW, a national shoe retailer known for its wide selection and good prices, will become an anchor tenant and is scheduled to open in the spring.

The addition of DSW fits into the ongoing revitalization efforts that began when KGI Properties purchased the Woburn Mall on Mishawum Road in Woburn, Massachusetts, in 2001.

The Market Basket supermarket will undergo an expansion and complete renovation in the coming months. Also, significant improvements to traffic flow and parking lot lighting are underway, while new exterior entrances already have improved customer accessibility, said Charles Irving of KGI Properties.

“The addition of DSW shoe really is icing on the cake in our efforts to update and revitalize the Woburn Mall,” Irving said. “Our focus is enhancing customer satisfaction and creating an enjoyable mall experience. DSW is a perfect complement to the stores we have now, and the variety and pricing they offer on shoes is going to be a real draw.”

DSW is scheduled to open in the spring of 2007. KGI will expand the former Hallmark store on the north side of the mall to accommodate an 18,000 square foot space for DSW.

DSW (www.dswshoes.com), with 213 stores from coast to coast, offers a distinctive, retail concept that allows customers to choose from a wide assortment of shoes and styles that are instantly accessible. Typical DSW stores have more than 30,000 pairs of shoes in more than 2,000 styles displayed on the self-service selling floor.

The Woburn Mall, located between Mishawum Road and Commerce Way, also features such national tenants as Sports Authority, TJMaxx, Homegoods, CVS, and Payless Shoes.

KGI Properties in August launched the second phase of its modernization of the 34-year-old mall. The Boston firm will spend $3.5 million for on and off site improvements, which include improving traffic circulation by changing parking islands and drive aisles, upgrading parking lot lighting and adding new traffic lights on Mishawum Road.

The Market Basket supermarket also is set to launch an 8,000-square-foot expansion – almost a 20 percent increase – and a complete renovation of its existing space. Work is scheduled to be completed in mid-2007.

“Customers are going to see a brand new, completely updated supermarket here that will continue to practice what we do best, which is to offer great prices, a clean store and a service-oriented staff,” said store Manager Ron Lambert of Market Basket, which operates 58 supermarkets in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. “This is an exciting time at the Woburn Mall and we’re happy to be a part of the revitalization effort.”
